While we celebrate the Calgary Stampede, the Calgarians are looking to beat the heat!

While we continue to Celebrate the Calgary Stampede with a week of surprises and lots of cash to be won, Calgarians are looking for ways to beat the heat.

Southern Alberta is in the grips of a heat wave, with temperatures close to 30 C in the city Tuesday, and expected to remain in the high 20s throughout the week.

“We do anticipate over the next couple of days some late afternoon or early evening thunderstorms developing.” said Environment Canada meteorologist Bill McMurtry.

While that happens and the temperatures drop, here are some ways you can cool down under the glaring sun:

Set the Dial Higher

If you have central air, set your thermostat above 78 degrees (all temperatures cited here are in degrees Fahrenheit). You’ll save 5 to 8 percent on cooling costs with each degree above that mark. For a typical household, setting the thermostat at 80 degrees saves 10 to 15 percent; raising it to 85 degrees will save 35 to 55 percent.

Wear loose fitting light colored clothing.

Lighter colors attract less heat and with loose clothing it will allow for more air-flow to help keep you cool.

Change your routine.

As nice as that run may be early afternoon on a Saturday, summer is not the time for it! Adjust your activities so they are happening earlier or later in the day when the temperatures are cooler and the sun isn’t beating on you as harshly.

Snack on treats from the freezer

Munch on frozen grapes, berries or bananas, whip up some smoothies, or make homemade Popsicles with the kids.

Spritz yourself.

Keep a spray bottle in the refrigerator, and when the going gets hot, give yourself a good squirt. “As the water evaporates, it cools you.” says John Lehnhardt, an elephant expert at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida

Swig often. To replace the moisture that you lose as you perspire, be sure to drink. As you lose water to dehydration, your body temperature rises, so replacing fluids is essential to keeping cool. Avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar, which are dehydrating.

Go for a swim…

…even if its in a plastic pool in the back yard!

Madonna’s Daughter Debuts in the movie W.E

As people say its not what you know but who you know, and in this special case being the daughter of the Queen of Pop Madonna is more than enough. Having mummy’s help last year, when launching her Material Girl fashion line Lourdes Leon jumped into the fashion world.

This year Madge has decided to support her daughter once again. This time Lourdes has been confirmed to have an acting role in “W.E.” A film directed and co-written by Madonna. The movie focuses on the affair between King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy) and American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). (This is like the sister movie of The King’s Speech as it will tell the story of King George VI’s brother).

The movie will be finished in October and it is rumored to be appearing at the Venice Film Festival later this year. I hope Madonna is giving Lourdes more than the $5-an-hour I got from my mom for doing the Spring cleaning when I was a kid.

Bingo Makes Everything Better – Even the Academy Awards

Bingo Seen Through the Camera Lens

Bingo Halls are full of interesting stories, exciting games, eccentric characters and above all fun. But to somebody who is not an avid bingo player or has never visited one this is a whole new world! It is exactly this fascinating world that was able to capture the attention and inspire the British photographer, Michael Hess, to not only take pictures within the old fashioned bingo halls but to come up with a book called: Bingo and the Social Club.

Through his work he wants people to feel what it is like to spent a night at the bingo hall and sense what it is like to be part of a bingo community. Although some people insist on seeing bingo as just another form of gambling, to  people like us enthusiastic players bingo goes beyond that. To us  it is about making friends, having fun and of course, the occasional winning bingo! (Like our slogan says – Happiness is Yelling Bingo!)

It is a shame that not all of us will be able to attend his photographic exhibition which will show a selection of images from the book as well as some extra unpublished work. I am sure one way or another most of us would be able to identify with it. Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez?

Whether it was rivalry or coincidence, the ultimate battle is here. Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez will compete to achieve the #1 place on the sales chart next month as they will be launching their new album on the same day, March 29^th 2011.

“Love?” is the name of the upcoming album of the new American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez. According to her, “it has been inspired by the birth of her twins and her own experiences with love”. Meanwhile the pop princess Britney Spears decided to dedicate hers “Femme Fatale” album to “all my fans, who have always supported me and have stuck by me every step of the way! I love you all!”

To keep us involved on the matter both singers have released part of their new videos so here is a sneak peak to “On The Floor” and “Hold it Against Me”:

This will be the 7^th studio album for both of them during their long careers. In the end both are talent and the fans will decide on the 29th.
